After a long year, summer is finally here. Sunshine, vacations and warm temperatures are all inducements to get outdoors. Summer is great time of the year, but don’t forget about those pesky thunderstorms that tend to pop up occasionally.

If it seems like summer has more thunderstorms, you would be correct. The conditions in the summertime are ripe for storm formation. All that’s required for a thunderstorm is moisture and warm air, and we have ample supply of both.

Be Cautious of Storms

Storms still require caution! While they may be more common during the summer months, it doesn’t mean you should ignore them. If thunderstorms are in the forecast, consider canceling outdoor events.

Pay attention to local weather forecasts. Consider getting an NOAA Weather radio to continue to receive forecasts in case of a power outage.

Flooding is possible and difficult to predict, but if it’s likely, plan on staying off the roads.

High winds can break trees and send backyard objects airborne. It’s best to keep trees trimmed and to store outdoor furniture inside before a storm arrives.

Too many people die every year in storm-related incidents. Be cautious and don’t take storms for granted.

Don’t Be Unprepared, Be Storm-Safe

Lightning kills about 50 people per year and injures hundreds more. If lightning is present, stay indoors.

Don’t venture outside until at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap. Lightning has been known to strike at least 10 miles from the closest rain.

Stay away from windows, and don’t shower or bathe while a storm is around you.

In cases of tornadoes or extreme, prolonged thunderstorms, make sure you have an emergency kit prepared, and know the evacuation route for your area in advance.

If you experience flooding, stay on high ground and avoid flood waters. Don’t drive through moving water as it can easily knock you off your feet or move a car. It can also hide road damage that could incapacitate your vehicle.
