You also may want to consider installing a generator in case of a power outage.

Create a family communications plan. Everyone in your household should be aware of what to do in case of a severe weather emergency, even if they are not home when things begin. Make sure you know how to communicate with one another when someone is away, as well as making sure you have a designated safe zone in your home for all the people and pets in the house to hide out in during severe weather.

Make sure your emergency kit is stocked. An emergency kit is useful in two main ways: for one, when you are in your safe area, you will have access to food, water and medical equipment during the duration of the storm. It can also come in handy after the storm passes, in case power is out and it is difficult to access resources in the aftermath. Either way, stock your emergency kit for both short and long-term supplies to remain safe.

Consider getting a weather radio. Though most of us will depend on the internet to provide us with household updates, if a storm is severe, it may require more analog solutions for staying informed. If the power goes out and your phone dies, a weather radio can be a great solution so you can still get weather and emergency alerts. Be sure to choose a model that is either powered manually or with a type of battery that you have a surplus of, just in case.
